Physical education is a vital component of our school experience at Carnahan Elementary. Students come to PE class every other school day for 45 minutes. In our classroom, we work on important skills and concepts including team building, health, nutrition, strength, cardiovascular endurance and conflict resolution. These are all learned through play. Regular participation in physical education helps to increase student health, which has a direct and positive impact on academic performance, student behavior and school attendance rates (CDC, 2018). In addition, students learn a vast array of exercise methods and sports skills, helping to instill a lifetime appreciation for fitness and love of sport. Perhaps most importantly, our students work each day on cooperation and working with others to achieve goals, teaching them vital teamwork skills that they will utilize throughout their lives.
