Understandings

Students will identify the origins of African civilizations and explain their importance.

 

Students will be able to identify and explain how African civilizations expanded throughout history.

 

Students will analyze the effects of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade on the Old World and New World.

Students will identify the impact of slavery on the culture of Africans in America and compare these cultures to those in Africa.

 

Students will analyze the effects of the American Revolution on Africans both free and enslaved in the United States.

 

Students will analyze the impact of slavery on the growing sectionalism in the United States as well as the effects of industrialization on the institution of slavery in America.  

Students will analyze the impact African Americans made during the Civil War such as serving in combat regiments during the war.

 

Students will describe the significant changes brought about by the various Reconstruction policies following the Civil War and analyze how these changes impacted African Americans.

 

Students will explore the various opposition faced by African Americansโ€™ efforts at achieving equality in the waning years of the Reconstruction period.  

Students will explain the struggles African Americans faced in the latter half of the 19th century including the concept of separate but equal established by Plessy v. Ferguson.

 

Students will explain the economic causes for the Great migration including job opportunities in the north while also explaining the social causes of African American migration from the south.  

 

Students will describe the early efforts of the NAACP and African American civil rights leaders like Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois at attempting to achieve racial equality in the United States.

Understandings

Students will explain how World War One impacted African Americans in the United States.

 

Students will analyze the opportunities and challenges for African Americans in the immediate wake of the First World War.

 

Students will describe the impact of the Harlem Renaissance including the influence of jazz and literature on bringing awareness to the African American struggles.

Students will analyze the impacts of the Great Depression on African Americans, particularly the Dust Bowl which pushed many Black farmers from their farms.

 

Students will describe the New Dealโ€™s impact on African Americans, specifically analyzing the differences in New Deal policies for whites as well as Blacks.

 

Students will describe the impact of African Americans during the Second World War.

Students will analyze the political and legislative actions in support of civil rights during the 1950s.

 

Students will analyze and evaluate the effect of the civil rights movement during the 1960s in particular the passage of legislation like the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

 

Students will examine the shift in civil rights outcomes for African Americans during the 1970s.

 

Students will evaluate the impact of Supreme Court decisions during the 1950s and 1960s regarding racial equity.

Students will analyze the economic challenges facing African American communities in the 1980s to today.

 

Students will identify various political and social movements that are intended to continue the press for racial equality for African Americans in the United States.

 

Students will analyze the struggle of the African American community to define its identity in the 21st century.
