Unit 2: Operations: Whole Numbers & Decimals

Unit 3: Operations: Fractions

Time

Understandings

Student will represent the value of a digit in decimals through the thousandths place using expanded notation and numerals

Students will compare and order two decimals to the thousandths place, and correctly represent their comparisons using the symbols >, <, or  = .

Students will round decimals to the tenths or hundredths place.

Students will round decimals to the tenths or hundredths place and estimate to determine solutions to real-world problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.

Students will fluently multiply whole numbers (three digits by two digits) and divide whole numbers (up to four digits by two digits) using strategies and the standard algorithms.

Students will solve problems involving multiplying and dividing decimals (with products/quotients to the hundredths place), including money situations. Students will use visual models (like area models) and strategies based on place value to understand these operations.

Students will identify and tell the difference between two kinds of number patterns: additive (adding or subtracting a constant amount) and multiplicative (multiplying or dividing by a constant amount).

Students will understand the purpose of parentheses and brackets in a numeric expression and use this knowledge to simplify numerical expressions that involve multiple steps and grouping symbols (Order of Operations).

Students will estimate to determine solutions to real-world problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.

Students will represent and solve addition and subtraction of fractions with unequal denominators by using objects, pictorial models, and properties of operations.

Students will represent and solve multiplication of a whole number and a fraction using objects and pictorial models, including area models.

Students will represent and solve division involving unit fractions (dividing a unit fraction by a whole number, and dividing a whole number by a unit fraction) using objects, pictorial models (including area models).

Student will fluently add and subtract positive rational numbers

Students will identify prime and composite numbers.

Understandings

Students will classify and organize two-dimensional shapes into groups based on their characteristics using diagrams or charts.

Students will create and graph number patterns when given the rule.

Students will understand the coordinate plane, including the meaning of the axis and the origin (the starting point). They will be able to graph points (ordered pairs of numbers) to solve problems or graph patterns.

Students will use models to understand and apply the formula to find the volume of rectangular prisms and cubes.

Students will represent and solve real-world problems involving perimeter, area, and volume.

Students will solve problems by calculating conversions within a single measurement system.

Students will represent and organize different types of data using various graphs and tables, including bar graphs, dot plots, stem-and-leaf plots, and scatterplots.

Students will solve one- and two-step problems by reading and understanding the information presented in frequency tables, dot plots, bar graphs, stem-and-leaf plots, and scatterplots.

Students will define and understand the differences between various types of taxes (income, payroll, sales, and property tax). They will also learn the difference between gross income (pay before deductions) and net income (take-home pay).

Students will learn the advantages and disadvantages of different ways to pay for things (check, credit card, debit card, and electronic payments). They will also learn how to keep financial records and how to balance a simple budget, including what to do if their expenses are greater than their income.
