Understandings

Students will be able to identify and trace the historical development of Mexican American identify through early history.

 

Students will be able to explain the development of early Mesoamerican civilizations in history to include the Aztec and Mayan cultures.

 

Students will be able to identify key individuals in the period of La Conquista and analyze their impact on the mesoamerican civilizations of Mexico and the Southwestern United States.

Students will explain the major causes and effects of the Mexican Independence movement in 1821 as well as identify key individuals and their roles in the movement.

 

Students will be able to explain the impact of events such as Texasโ€™s declaration of independence and the Mexican-American War on the history and identity of Mexican Americans in the region.

 

Students will be able to explain the key individuals and their goals during the Mexican Revolution of 1910 and analyze the impact of the Revolution on Mexican Americans in the United States along the border states.

Students will be able to explain the effect of the Great Depression on Mexican Americans in the United States including the repatriation of many Mexican nationals and misrepatriation of Mexican Americans during the time period.

 

Students will analyze the significance of the Bracero Program during the Second World War and its impacts on the Mexican American identity in the American southwest.

 

Students will identify key individuals and trace their impact in the civil rights efforts for Mexican Americans during the period following World War Two.

 

Students will analyze how Mexican Americans sought to obtain civil rights in states like Texas using a combination of political activism, political lobbying, and judicial activism through cases like Hernandez v. Texas (1954).

 

Students will be able to identify the contributions of key individual in the Farm Workers Movement and Mexican labor movement and analyze how these groups used strikes and picketing to facilitate social change for Mexican Americans.

 

Students will identify key individuals related to the Chicano movement of the 1970s and analyze their effect on Mexican American cultural identity.

Understandings

Students will describe significant legislative and legal changes regarding Mexican Americans and Mexican immigrants to the United States.

 

Students will analyze the influence of Mexican Americans on Americaโ€™s economy as well as their political impact on 21st century elections.

 

 

Students will identify key latina women in early Mexican and American history and explain their contributions to the development of American society.

 

Students will identify the origins of the term chicana and explain how these evolving gender roles have shaped Mexican American cultural identity through history.

 

Students will examine the current role female Mexican Americans play in the development and evolution of Mexican American culture and identity.  

Students will be able to identify and analyze various works of literature composed throughout history by Mexican American authors.

 

Students will be able to identify ways that Mexican Americans utilized visual arts to help convey the cultural narrative of the culture and analyze how these works come to symbolize various cultural regions and communities.

 

Students will identify and analyze various ways Mexican American culture has shaped and influence music both within the Latino culture as well as American culture over time.

 

Students will identify ways that Mexican Americans have influenced the development and evolution of film and television in American pop culture over time.
