Darren Calvert - Principal
Although I did not graduate from Northside, I have proudly served the district for the past 29 years. I began my career as a paraprofessional and, through dedication and hard work, advanced to become a Special Education teacher. After six years in the classroom, I transitioned into the role of Behavior Specialist, where I served for three years before moving into school counseling. I worked as a counselor for seven years before ultimately stepping into administration.
This is my eleventh year as Principal of Irene L. Chavez Excel Academy. While I hold high expectations for our students and staff, I also lead with a warm, caring heart. Working at Chavez Excel Academy has allowed me to connect with students on a personal level, helping them face challenges and celebrating their successes. Our students thrive because we believe in their potential and set high standards. They trust us with their future, and we honor that responsibility. Excel is more than a school; it’s where dreams become reality.
