Dear Glenoaks Families,
During the months of August and September, your child will take a MAP® Growth™ test from NWEA® on a computer or tablet. MAP Growth scores help teachers check student performance by measuring achievement and growth. Teachers use results to tailor classroom lessons and set goals for students.
MAP Growth tests are unique and adapt to your child’s responses to measure your child’s knowledge. If your child answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If they answer incorrectly, the next one is easier. These results will provide a more complete picture of where your child is on their learning journey— regardless of whether they are on, above, or below their grade level.
Since MAP Growth tests provide immediate and accurate information about your child’s learning, it’s easy for teachers to identify students with similar scores in similar skills and topics and then plan instruction accordingly.
MAP Growth reports also provide typical growth data for students in the same grade and subject with the same starting performance level. Following each testing period, you will receive a Family Report showing a summary of how your child is performing academically.
Here is the schedule for the assessments: Math MAP will be administered on 8/24 for 2 & 5 graders and on 8/25 for 3 & 4 graders. Reading MAP will be administered on 8/31 for 2 & 5 graders and on 9/1 for 3 & graders.

Reading Tips/Consejos de lectura
The excitement of the first day has slowly shifted to the daily routines all around the school. There is the buzz as students learn how to communicate with a partner. You might be asking, "How can I help my child at home?" One way to help is to have an interesting conversation with your child. Talking with your child may seem simple, but it helps support their education in many ways. It helps children learn that conversations revolve around a topic in which we respond to what someone says. It helps our kids learn new vocabulary related to a topic that interests them. Interesting topics are all around us. Start with something that interests your child like dinosaurs, dogs, or Minecraft. Ask them to talk about the topic. Then respond by asking questions to go even deeper into the conversation. Finally, add on to the conversation to help your child see the topic in a different way or with different vocabulary. Once you start having these conversations, you and your child will both look forward to this time talking with one another.
La emoción del primer día se ha ido transformando poco a poco en las rutinas diarias en toda la escuela. Se siente el zumbido mientras los estudiantes aprenden a comunicarse con un compañero. Quizá te estés preguntando: "¿Cómo puedo ayudar a mi hijo(a) en casa?" Una manera de ayudar es mantener una conversación interesante con tu hijo(a).
