In first grade we will expand the math, reading, writing and science skills students learned in kindergarten. By the end of the year students will be expected to read fluently on a Fountas and Pinnell level J. Some of the things they should be able to do include solving math word problems, addition math facts, spelling words using word patterns taught and using the scientific method in science. Reading is a major focus in first grade. We follow the Science of Reading which uses a systematic and explicit approach to teaching phonics and phonemic awareness. Weekly newsletters will be sent out to show the focus for each subject that week.
