8th Grade Transition and Course Selection
Our Northside counselors are working hard to prepare our 8th graders for the transition to high school. This includes selecting courses for students' 9th grade year. Depending on their high school plans, our magnet students will complete course registration in one of three ways:
- If your 8th grader will be attending Jay Science & Engineering Academy or Jay High School, they will compete a course registration card here at the Jones campus.
- If your 8th grader accepts a seat at one of Northside's other magnet high schools or Jay Early College High School, that campus will reach out to your student to complete course registration. (Remember that magnet school offers will be emailed on the afternoon of February 2.)
- If your 8th grader will be returning to their neighborhood high school, they will visit with counselors from their campus during a school trip scheduled for February 19. Watch for permission slips for this trip.
Parents will be able to review students' course cards before they are finalized.
Magnet School Applications Close Soon
Applications for Northside's magnet middle schools and magnet high schools are open NOW. This year's application window closes on January 23. Families can apply for middle school and high school magnet programs at https://nisd.net/magnets.
- Current 8th grade students are invited to explore their high school options. Students at Jones STEM are granted automatic admission to the Science & Engineering Academy at Jay High School. If Jones STEM students want to attend Jay SEA, they do not need to complete an application. A seat is already reserved for them. If 8th graders are interested in other magnet high school options, they should complete the magnet application at https://nisd.net/magnets.
- Current Jones STEM 6th & 7th graders do not need to re-apply. Enrollment is continuous.
- Current 5th grade students are invited to apply to Northside's magnet middle schools. There are now FIVE magnet programs for middle school students. These programs accept students outside of the school district. Cluster bus route transportation is provided within the district's boundaries.
