SAN ANTONIO — Dr. John Craft, Superintendent of the Northside ISD, is announcing his intent to retire after 27 years of serving students and staff in public education.
Coach Craft began his career in the classroom teaching Biology and working with students and athletes for Carroll ISD in 1999. His campus leadership included time as a High School Assistant Principal in Carroll and High School Principal in Mansfield ISD before being hired as Superintendent of Schools for Hamilton ISD in 2010. Following Hamilton, he served as the Superintendent for Killeen ISD before becoming the Superintendent for Northside ISD in 2023.
Throughout Dr. Craft’s career, he has channeled his energy toward creating optimal learning opportunities for students, forging new, innovative, high-performing campuses, passing historic bonds for modern, safe facilities, and working intentionally to care for thousands of employees and hundreds of thousands of students.
Dr. Craft succinctly summarized his career by stating, “It’s always been about creating opportunities for students. The development of performance-driven teams, along with intentional planning and deliberate actions with the support and collaboration of so many amazing leaders, has always been with students’ best interests at the core of our collective efforts. I consider myself truly blessed to have served the children within Texas public schools.”
Dr. Craft intends to continue serving greater public interests in the future, while working diligently to ensure young Texans are provided the opportunities for bright and promising futures.
“Serving the students and the Northside ISD community has been the privilege of a lifetime. I am so grateful for the opportunity, and I will forever remain appreciative to the NISD Board for their support and steadfast efforts in navigating the challenges, celebrating the accomplishments, and remaining focused on students' success."
The NISD Board of Trustees will convene on June 9 to consider and discuss a transition plan for finding the next successor to lead San Antonio's largest school district.
