Northside ISD is proud to join the nationwide Attendance Awareness Campaign this September, reaffirming our commitment to reducing chronic absenteeism and supporting student success.
“September is the perfect time to shine a spotlight on attendance,” said Kathy Lyssy, Director of the Office of Student Advocacy and School Choice. “When we address absences early—both in the school year and in a child’s academic journey—we have the power to positively shape their path toward success in both attendance and achievement.”
Chronic absence is defined as missing 10% of the school year—about 18 days, or just two per month, for any reason. Unlike truancy, which measures only unexcused absences, chronic absence provides a broader picture of which students are missing too much school. These missed days result in lost learning opportunities, lower academic performance, and challenges to social, emotional, and physical development.
Attendance also directly impacts funding. In Texas, school funding is tied to daily attendance, and in the face of statewide budget shortfalls, every day matters. Every student in class helps Northside ISD continue to provide high-quality instruction, safe campuses, and well-maintained schools for all.
“Student attendance impacts all of us—not just families with school-aged children,” Lyssy said. “When students show up, engage in learning, and graduate, the whole community thrives. Strong schools build stronger communities and prepare a more capable workforce. Every day in school is a step toward opportunity.”
This September, Northside ISD calls on families, staff, and the entire community to come together and ensure every student is present, engaged, and ready to learn—because when students show up today, they are prepared for tomorrow. Together, we carry forward an Unstoppable Legacy.
