JSEA student named All-Star Athlete

Jackson Gutierrez, a senior at Jay Science and Engineering Academy, was chosen as the 2023-24 KENS 5 All-Star Student Athlete Award winner. Surrounded by his fellow football team members, he was presented the award by KENS5 Great Day reporter and co-host Clark Finney.

“Jackson is an extremely involved young man who has had to learn how to balance his academics with his extracurricular activities,” said Jay HS Principal Teresa Cuellar-Hernandez who nominated him for the award.

Gutierrez is currently ranked 48 in his class (out of 491 students) with a grade point average of 97.13. He has been named to the first-team academic all-district in baseball, basketball, football, and track. He has lettered in four varsity sports and is a member of the Jay HS National Honor Society.

He has been awarded academic excellence for both baseball and basketball and also made the second team all-district as a designated hitter on the baseball team and was the MVP for the baseball team last school year.

When not in class or at practice, Gutierrez spends hours at school volunteering with his school, community, and the National Honor Society. He assists in open houses, Induction ceremonies for incoming freshmen, STEM Fest, and prep days just to name a few.

“Jackson is truly a motivated man in school as well as in his community,” Cuellar-Hernandez said. “I can attest to the fact that Jackson is a fine young man who takes his schoolwork seriously, but above all else, he exemplifies the qualities of integrity and character.”

The air date for the story about this special presentation will be run on KENS5 Great Day SA on Friday, Sept. 22.
