Warren High School carpentry teacher Chase Haecker received a surprise that he—and his students—won’t soon forget. He was asked to come into the gym to look at a flooring issue, but as he walked into the gym he was greeted by cheering students, staff, District leaders, cheerleaders, and a pep band.
Haecker was named one of 25 recipients of the 2026 Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence, recognizing outstanding skilled trades educators across the country. He was surprised with a $75,000 check during a ceremony at Warren High School on Sept. 29.
The national program awarded $2 million in prizes to skilled trades teachers who are preparing students for successful careers.
For Haecker, teaching carpentry is about much more than learning to build. “The true reward of my work is witnessing students translate these skills and their own creativity into tangible furniture or structures,” he said. “My classes not only give students skills, but also hope.”
Haecker brought years of industry experience to his classroom after working in accessibility compliance and home construction. A three-time CTE Department Teacher of the Year, he created an engaging, hands-on program where students work alongside him on residential and commercial projects while earning industry-recognized certifications.
His students also gain real-world experience through partnerships with organizations including Habitat for Humanity and Marek Brothers. The program has maintained a 95% graduation rate, with students earning paid internships and moving directly into full-time employment after graduation.
The impact extends beyond the classroom. Each year, Haecker’s students build storage sheds for the Alamo Housing Authority and bunk beds for Sleep in Heavenly Peace, helping provide resources to local families and children in need.
Haecker’s national recognition celebrates not only his expertise as a skilled trades educator, but also the opportunities he creates for Warren students to build skills, confidence and a future.
