Understandings | • Organization: Mandatory setup, tab labeling, and daily planner use; Introduction to "GROW" (Sit up, Listen, Ask, Nod, Track). • Introduction to the Cornell Note format; focusing on the "Notes" section (Phase 1) and the "Summary" (Phase 5). • Establishing the "AVID Family" through name games and collaborative puzzles. • Understanding the difference between a "Fixed" vs. "Growth" mindset. | • Introduction to Level 1 (Gathering/Input) questions; practicing identifying what we don't know. • Learning the "Tutorial 10 Steps"; practicing the "30-Second Speech" for presenting a POC (Point of Confusion). • Introduction to "Numbering Paragraphs" and "Circle the Key Terms" in short, high-interest texts. • Introduction to Grade Reflections and the "Learning Log." |

Understandings | • Introduction to "Philosophical Chairs" (basic setup) and the importance of active listening. • Using "Interactive Word Walls" to build academic language; focus on context clues. • Learning how to use a table of contents and index; identifying "The Main Idea" in expository texts. • Sustaining organization neatness; transition from teacher-checked planners to peer-checked planners. | • Selecting 2-3 "Best Works" from the year for the AVID Portfolio; writing a letter to their future 7th-grade self. • Delivering a 1-minute "Personal Artifact" speech to the class. • Introduction to the "College is Possible" mindset; exploring mascot/colors of a partner university. • Identifying one academic habit to "Keep," "Stop," and "Start" for next year. |
