BASIC FIRST AID

Unit 1:(6  Weeks) 

-Introduction into Law Enforcement, Fire, EMS, Corrections and Security.

-Identify the sources and origins of laws in the United States. 

-Explain the impact of the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights on criminal law in regard to the rights of citizens. 

-Analyze the impact of constitutional law on the police as it relates to arrest, use of force, and search and seizures. 

-Differentiate between crimes classified as felonies or misdemeanors and the punishments for each.

-Analyze the essential elements and classifications of a crime. 

-Identify the problems commonly associated with the enforcement of criminal laws. 

-Outline the process by which laws are enacted

Unit 2:(3 Weeks) 

-Law  Enforcement Procedures

-Identify career opportunities at the Municipal, County, State and Federal Levels

Identify the education and training required for various levels of law enforcement. 

-Identify the Role and Responsibilities of Law Enforcement Professionals.

-Identify how Public Safety professionals manage stress related to these jobs 

-Define when a person is under arrest, in constructive custody, and under restraint.

 

-Recognize that once an arrest, search, or stop has been made, the information gathered to establish probable cause or to articulate suspicion to justify the officer’s initial action cannot be added.

 

-Analyze the impact of Constitutional Law on police as it relates to arrests, use of force, searches and seizures

-Common problems that exist when attempting to enforce laws against crimes such as electronic crimes, hate crimes, hot pursuits, human trafficking, and use of force involving special populations. Analyze various criminal laws. Define electronic crimes, hate crimes, hot pursuits, human trafficking, racial profiling, and special populations. Resolve ethical issues as they relate to enforcing criminal laws.

 -The student will be able to: Identify the steps of CPR

-Differentiate between the three types of bleeding.

Unit: 5 (3 Weeks) 

-Define the participants involved in the criminal trial process

 

-Identify and explain the roles of the various professional members of the courtroom workgroup

 

 -Identify and explain the roles of the various paraprofessional and nonprofessional participants

 

-Explain how professional and nonprofessional courtroom participants work together to bring most criminal trials to a successful close.

 

-What role does each criminal court in Texas play?

 

-Identify types of sentencing and sentencing rules

Unit 6: (3 Weeks)

-Explain what career opportunities are available in the correctional system, including probation and parole. 

-Explain the duties and responsibilities of correctional officers

-Outline the history of prisons in the U.S.

- Explain the differences between jails and prisons

-. Identify the levels of security in prisons and jails. 

- Explain the constitutional rights of inmates in prisons and jails

-Explain the career opportunities available in private security

-Discuss the history and importance of private security in the United States

-Examine the relationship between private security and public safety agencies

-Identify key terms associated with ethics in private security

-Understand regulations and policies that govern private security personnel

Unit 7: (3 Weeks)

-Identify career opportunities in public and private fire services sector  

-Explain the duties and responsibilities of fire fighting jobs in fire services 

-Explain the duties of non-fire fighting jobs in the fire services

-Define key terms associated with EMS

-Distinguish between public and private EMS

-Describe the role and responsibilities of the EMS professional 

-Discuss the history of EMS

-Explain how ethics affect interactions with patients, healthcare professionals and the public      

 

Unit 8: (6 Weeks)

 Law Enforcement , Corrections, and Fire Department employees often work in dangerous environments with and without hazardous materials. In order to stay safe, they must be able to recognize the dangers and handle hazardous materials safely. The student will be able to:

 Define key terms. Identify the categories of hazardous materials List common hazardous materials. Discuss methods for safe handling of hazardous materials Use special requirements for handling hazardous materials to maintain a safe working environment. Recommend strategies for issues related to the safety and health of employees based on an assessment of a simulated workplace environment.

-Recognize the steps in wound care. Examine the injuries resulting from extreme heat and cold

 -Demonstrate first aid and CPR procedures.

-Community Emergency Response Training

Students to research careers in corrections/Private security within their geographical area, including information about hiring guidelines, job duties, and salaries. The students should report their findings to the class. They can then compare and contrast correctional careers, and discuss the differences between jails and prisons.
