Unit 1: Policies and Procedures

• Explain expectations and work ethics. 

• Discuss and practice professional communication skills

Unit 2:  Safety and the Automotive Shop

• Demonstrate knowledge and skills related to health and shop safety.

• Draw a typical shop layout showing emergency exits, fire extinguisher placement and safety glass cabinet location. 

• Explain personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety datasheets (SDS.)

• Pass safety test. 

 

Unit 3:  Measurements & Fasteners

• Understand units of measure and where they apply to automotive service

• Identify common measuring tools 

• Perform common measurements and perform conversions

Unit 4:  Tools

• Explain the care and use of multiple hand tools and air power tools.

• Explain safety rules for hand tools and power tools.

• Explain the advantage and disadvantages of each.

• Explain air compressor service procedures. 

• Demonstrate the proper use of other shop equipment and tools.

• Explain the eight major vehicle mechanical systems and the function of each system.

Unit 8:  Vehicle Maintenance

• Explain the importance of regularly having your vehicle serviced and oil changed.

• Locate all service points on a vehicle.

•  Explain and show different type of fluids used in a vehicle. 

• Identify tools and equipment required to service some systems. 

• Explain service intervals (how often to change the fluids). 

• Demonstrate proper environmental safety practices with the disposal of old fluids.

Unit 9:  Tire, Wheel and Wheel Bearing

• Identify and interpret tire sidewall data information such as Department of Transportation (DOT) production date information, tire load capacity, inflation pressures, sizing description, and speed rating.

• Explain the function of the automobile tires. 

• Identify different types of tire construction. 

• Observe wheel designs and wheel bearing types.

• Demonstrate the safety and proper use of tire service equipment to mount and dismount tire from wheel.

• Identify bearing types and perform preventative maintenance inspections based on vehicle needs.

Unit 10:  Brake System Fundamentals 

• Explain the function and show the parts of the disc and drum brake system.

• Disassemble and reassemble brake system. 

• Show primary and secondary drum brake shoes. 

• Explain function of the master cylinder.  

• Explain Pascal’s Theory and fluid types.

Unit 11:  Brake Systems Diagnostics, Service & Repair

• Perform disc brake system inspection. 

• Disassemble and reassemble disc brake to identify and inspect parts. 

• Identify brake specific tools and equipment (Brake Lathes, bench and on-car, power bleeder, brake wash, and brake hand tools)

• Remove and inspect master cylinder, wheel cylinders and calipers for preventative maintenance and Pascal’s Theory.

 

Unit 12:  Suspension System Fundamentals

• Explain the function of a strut, shock, coil spring and leaf spring. 

• Identify major parts of suspension parts and demonstrate understanding of operation

• Explain the advantage of independent suspension. 

Explain proper ride height.

 

Unit 13:  Suspension System Diagnostics, Service & Repair

• Inspect and identify chassis parts.

• Perform routine suspension inspections and compare to maintenance schedules.

• Demonstrate safe practices and proper tool usage during replacing key components (struts, shocks sway bar bushings).

Unit 13:  Suspension System Diagnostics, Service & Repair

• Inspect and identify chassis parts.

• Perform routine suspension inspections and compare to maintenance schedules.

• Demonstrate safe practices and proper tool usage during replacing key components (struts, shocks sway bar bushings).  

Unit 14:  Steering System Fundamentals 

• Identify steering components and demonstrate understanding of designs.

• Compare steering designs (racks & pinion, conventional)

• Identify power steering designs and operation

Unit 15: Steering System Diagnostics, Service & Repair

• Perform routine inspections and maintenance of steering systems.

• Inspect for worn bushings, joints and parts.

• Perform routine maintenance (grease friction points, change PS fluids, inspect PS pump belts for wear and tension, inspect hydraulic system for leaks)

• Demonstrate safe and proper tool usage to remove and replace steering parts.

 

Unit 16: Wheel Alignments

• Discuss the principles and importance of a wheel alignment

• Perform alignment preventative maintenance inspection.    

• Demonstrate proper alignment setup.
