Fall Semester

Students read across a variety of genres to analyze how authors develop similar ideas and make meaningful connections to personal experiences, other texts, and the world.

Students use close reading, annotation, and structured academic discussions to evaluate how literary elements (such as plot, complex characters, setting, and point of view) interact to develop meaning, purpose, and message.

Students engage in daily short-form and reflective writing—such as micro-writing and notebook responses—to deepen text comprehension and brainstorm ideas.

Students formulate text-dependent writing that requires analyzing key ideas, selecting and embedding relevant text evidence, and synthesizing concepts across texts to construct new understandings.

Students apply the writing process to plan, draft, and publish an original literary piece that demonstrates clear development, purposeful organization, and intentional application of mentor text craft.

Students evaluate the strength of argumentative and multimodal texts by identifying central claims, analyzing supporting evidence, and assessing how authors handle counterarguments.

Students sustain daily literacy routines to build stamina and literacy notebooks to track, refine, and deepen critical thinking.

Students use frequent micro-writing to defend or challenge an author’s claim, formulating clear positions supported by integrated text evidence and logical reasoning.

Students apply the writing process to plan, draft, and publish a multi-paragraph argumentative piece in a correspondence format that establishes a clear claim, embeds well-chosen evidence, and addresses counterarguments for a specific audience and purpose.
