Fall Semester *Musical competencies are introduced to students and developed through various styles of music and fundamental exercises throughout the entire semester. All Mariachi courses in year 3 work develop competencies leading to proficient performance of the TMEA All-State audition etudes and a UIL Class 2 solo. Students will utilize these competencies to perform as contributing members of a Non Varsity ensemble or higher. | ||||||

| Know, Understand, & Demonstrate | Each student will demonstrate the proper playing posture while sitting down and standing up. Each student will be able to demonstrate proper breath support to be able to perform eight bar phrases. Each student will understand how breathing supports proper eight bar phrases with a goal of 100% mastery. Each student will sit tall, shoulders back, with feet flat. Students will also stand tall, shoulders back with proper stance. Each student will perform eight bar phrases at tempos between 70-120 bpm. Trumpet Breathing Routines, Trumpet Breathing Strategies, Vocal Warm Up (5 Minutes), Vocal Warm Up (10 Minutes) | Each student will be able to demonstrate balance and technique on their proper instruments. Each student will understand proper technique on their respective instrument. Each student will demonstrate proper technique on their respective instruments. | Each student will be able to demonstrate balanced technique; free of tension (relax); correct articulation for their instrument and or vocals. Each student will understand articulations corresponding to each instrument needed to produce a characteristic tone at tempos between 60-140 bpm. Each student will demonstrate the correct finger, bow, and tongue motion required to execute desired articualtion. Scales and exercises for violins, trumpets, guitarron, and vocals. Circulos and chord progressions for guitar and vihuela. | Each student will be able to identify proper performance presence/appearance. Each student will be able to understand basic performance etiquette. Each student will stand and perform individually and in an ensemble in front of an audience. | Each student will be able to read, write and perform music notation at an appropriate range for their instrument. Each student will understand and identify the components of the music staff and be able to name the lines and spaces appropriate for their instrument fluently.Students will perform standard full range on their instrument with fluency. Each student will do mock performances on stage and at different venues with microphones. | Each student will comprehend and recognize the Historical and Cultural relevance of Mariachi music and all that pertains to the genre (ex: traje, sombreros, instruments, evolution etc.) Each student will understand how culture, history, and social issues impact music composition. Each student will perform and analyze music from various styles and regions. |

Each student will read and perform 1-2 octave ascending and descending scales in steps and thirds accurately as well as read and play whole, half, quarter, eighth, and sixteenth rest/note rhythms.
