Understandings

Students will categorize and explain a variety of sounds including musical instruments such as woodwind, brass, string, percussion, keyboard, electronic and various cultures instruments and those of childrenโ€™s voices and soprano and alto adult voices. 

Students will sing and play with accurate intonation and rhythm independently and in groups to include American and Texan folk songs and folk songs representative of local cultures. 

Students will perform simple partwork including rhythmic and melodic ostinati, derived from known repertoire.

Students will move alone and with others to a varied repertoire using fine, gross, locomotor and non-locomotor skills and integrate movement of hands and feet together. 

Students will respond verbally and through movement to short musical examples.

Students will use known music symbols and terminology when referring to rhythm, melody, timbre, form, tempo dynamics (including crescendo, decrescendo) articulation (including staccato, legato) to explain musical sounds presented aurally while identifying previously learned terms. 

Students will recognize known rhythmic and melodic elements in aural examples using appropriate vocabulary and describe musical events such as changes in timbre, form, tempo, dynamics or articulation.

Students will read, write, and reproduce extended pentatonic melodic patterns using standard staff notation.

Students will perform music representative of America and Texas including โ€œTexas, Our Texas.โ€  

Students will exhibit audience etiquette during live and recorded performances.

Spring  Semester

Students will sing and play with accurate intonation and rhythm independently and in groups to include American and Texan folk songs and folk songs representative of local cultures. 

Students will perform simple partwork including rhythmic and melodic ostinati, derived from known repertoire.

Students will perform various folk dances and play parties. 

Students will create rhythmic and melodic phrases through improvisation or composition. 

Students will create simple accompaniments through improvisation or composition.

Students will identify and label small and large musical forms such as abac, ab, aba, and rondo presented aurally in simple songs and larger works.

Students will identify and describe music from diverse genres, styles, periods and cultures. And examine the relationships between music and interdisciplinary concepts.

Students will read, write and reproduce and extended pentatonic melodic patterns using standard staff notation and identify new and previously learned symbols and terms referring to tempo, dynamics (including crescendo, decrescendo) and articulation (including staccato, legato).

Students will interpret through performance new and previously learned music symbols and terms referring to tempo, dynamics (including crescendo, decrescendo) and articulation (including staccato, legato).

Students will perform a varied repertoire of songs, movement and games representative of diverse cultures including historical folk songs of Texas and Hispanic and American Indian cultures in Texas. 

Students will describe a variety of compositions and formal or informal musical performances using specific music vocabulary and justify personal preference for specific music works and styles using music vocabulary.
