Grade 5 Music

Fall Semester

Students will distinguish among a variety of musical timbres, including children’s voices, adult voice types (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass), and various instrument families from various cultures.

 Students will sing and play classroom instruments independently or in groups with accurate intonation and rhythm while performing a repertoire of American folk songs and patriotic music. 

Students will also perform simple two-part music, including rhythmic and melodic ostinati and rounds

Students will move alone and with others to a varied repertoire of music using gross motor, fine motor, and integrated movement. 

Students will respond verbally and through movement to short musical examples to demonstrate an understanding of expressive elements.

Students will use known music symbols and terminology to explain sounds presented aurally, focusing on rhythm, melody, timbre, form, tempo, dynamics, and articulation. 

Students will describe specific musical events in aural examples using appropriate vocabulary to identify changes in timbre, form, or dynamics.

Students will exhibit proper audience etiquette during live and recorded performances. 

Students will perform music representative of Texas and America, including "The Star Spangled Banner".

Spring  Semester

Students will refine their technical proficiency by performing simple two-part music that includes counter melodies and partner songs. 

Students will apply their understanding of timbre to identify woodwind, brass, string, percussion, keyboard, and electronic instruments in diverse musical contexts. 

Students will continue to sing and play a varied repertoire representative of local and world cultures with increased independence.

Students will perform complex folk dances and play parties while moving alone and with others. 

Students will create rhythmic and melodic phrases and simple accompaniments through improvisation and composition.

Students will identify and label small and large musical forms such as rondo and theme and variations in simple songs and larger works. 

Students will identify and describe music from diverse genres, styles, periods, and cultures while examining the relationships between music and interdisciplinary concepts. 

Students will use academic vocabulary to justify their analysis of these complex musical structures.

Students will read, write, and reproduce extended pentatonic and diatonic melodic patterns using standard staff notation. 

Students will identify and interpret new and previously learned music symbols referring to tempo (including accelerando and ritardando), dynamics, articulation, and meter.

Students will interpret through performance new and previously learned music symbols and terms to accurately convey the composer's intent. 

Students will evaluate a variety of compositions and formal or informal performances using specific criteria. 

Students will justify personal preferences for specific music works and styles using their developed music vocabulary.
