In Northside, we follow a literacy framework that includes the explicit and systematic teaching of foundational literacy skills. The instructional components within our literacy framework promote the gradual release of responsibility from teacher to student. Our students engage in literacy learning during read alouds of mentor texts, shared and performance reading/writing, mini lessons, small group instruction, and independent reading/writing.
Reading Language Arts at Galm ES
At Galm Elementary, teachers create a literacy atmosphere through the reading and writing workshop model. We have a balanced approach to literacy that includes instruction in phonics, word study, comprehension, guided reading and writing, conferring, independent reading and writing and handwriting. Through engaging and authentic literacy experiences, teachers empower students to become lifelong readers and writers.
