Health Education Course

Health Education is a critical component of the overall education of all students in Northside ISD and is a district graduation requirement. Northside ISD offers a quality health education program that provides learning opportunities that are aligned to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for High School Health. The state adopted, and School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) Goodheart-Wilcox Texas High School Health Skills curriculum materials will be utilized to support TEKS-aligned course instruction.

Certain curriculum topics require an opt-in parent permission slip before instruction:

In accordance, and in compliance, with the Texas Education Code and Board Policy EHAA(LOCAL), Northside Independent School District provides human development instruction and anti-victimization instruction as part of the TEKS aligned curriculum in the High School Health Education course. Parents have the right to view the curriculum and/or remove their student from this instruction. The opt-in consent form will be sent out by each campus. Information about the curriculum materials to support human development and conflict, violence, and abuse instruction is included below.

As per House Bill 1525, parents/guardians must opt-in for their student to participate in the Sexuality Education Unit. The curriculum is abstinence focused – abstinence is the best option to prevent sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancy. Condoms and various other contraceptives are introduced (TEK 115.32 7.I), but not brought into the classroom. Teachers have been trained and provided with guidelines to appropriately and accurately answer common student generated questions that are opinion free and non-judgemental. Most questions asked by a student can be answered based on medical definitions and medical accuracy.

Goodheart-Wilcox Texas High School Health Skills curriculum materials will be utilized to support human reproduction/development and child anti-victimization instruction in the High School Health course. Only Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) aligned content within the publication will be utilized. Educating students to develop healthy behaviors today can improve their overall health and contribute to patterns of wellness that will extend into adulthood.
