NORTHSIDE ISD:  DEPARTMENT OF GUIDANCE & COUNSELING

The Northside Independent School District Guidance and Counseling Department will provide a comprehensive developmental program addressing the whole child to maximize academic achievement, social and emotional development, and post-secondary college and career readiness.


PROGRAM DEFINITION

Components
The Northside School Counseling Program on each campus supports the educational, career, personal, and social development of all students PK - 12, and is designed to include the following components: Guidance Curriculum, Individual Planning, Responsive Services, and System Support.

RESPONSIVE SERVICEThe purpose of the Responsive Service component is to intervene with or on behalf of those students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grades whose personal circumstance, concerns, or problems are threatening to interfere with or are interfering with their healthy personal, social, career and /or educational development.
SYSTEM SUPPORTThe System Support component describes management activities which assure the delivery of a high quality guidance program, and service which indirectly benefit students by supporting other programs.
GUIDANCE CURRICULUMThe Guidance Curriculum component includes skill-based lessons and units designed to help all students in kindergarten through 12th grade develop competence in essential life skills.  School counselors provide classroom guidance lessons that facilitate student growth and development in the areas of educational, career, personal, and social development in four curricular content areas: Intrapersonal Effectiveness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Post-Secondary Education and Career Readiness, and Personal Health and Safety.
INDIVIDUAL PLANNINGThe Individual planning component is where students are guided in planning, monitoring and managing their own educational, career, personal and social development. Each student is provided with necessary steps toward his/her established goals.

As professional school counselors, we help all students manage emotions and apply interpersonal skills. We deliver developmentally appropriate guidance lessons, provide academic, career, and college readiness to students, and support their social and emotional development. 

Hello, my name is Erica Vasquez and I am one of the Counselors at Knowlton Elementary. This is my sixth year as a school counselor and my 21st year in education. I have taught first, second and third grades all here at NISD. This year I service ALE, Pre-Kinder, Kinder, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th grades. 

I graduated from Taft high school and went on to receive my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from The University of Texas at San Antonio. I love my Runners!!!

Hi, my name is Brenda Silva and I am one of Knowlton’s School Counselors. This marks my fifth year as a counselor at this school. Prior to becoming a counselor, I taught Kindergarten, 2nd, and 3rd grade in NISD. I taught in a transitional bilingual setting and also taught Dual Language - 50/50 model at Villarreal Elementary.

I graduated in 2009 from the University of Texas at San Antonio with a Bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies-Bicultural Bilingual Studies. In 2019, I received a Master of Arts in Education-School Counseling. Go Runners! Meep, Meep!

This year, I service students in ALE, PreK, Kinder, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade. 

Clubs
Knowlton’s Young Ambassadors Club (4th-5th Graders) will launch this spring. Students will take on leadership roles, give tours to new students, assist with CCMR Day, and assist with monthly appreciation events and/or campus initiatives/activities.
