Description: In our club, we use coding programs that are available in English and Spanish for students to learn coding at their individual pace. We use block-based programming tools like Swift by Apple, CS First by Google, as well as robots like Sphero. As expressed by CS First, “by using computer science, students become creators and not just consumers of technology. They use computer science to tell stories, design, and build video games. And create all kinds of art! They develop creative problem-solving skills and a ‘debugging’ mindset, which approaches errors not as roadblocks, but as problems to be solved. These skills help all students, whether or not they choose computer science as a career path. They can be applied across all areas of the classroom and in the real world!”

Project ACORN is a club that provides students with hands-on opportunities to learn how the natural world around them functions as well as how they play a role in how it is impacted and sustained. Most of our lessons are taught through the use of our campus gardens which have been built by our Knowlton Community. Examples of some of the concepts we teach are migration patterns and what positively and negatively impacts animal populations through migration, how and why pollination is a necessity, benefits of native plants, the effects of human impact, and how to sustain a healthy ecosystem. Our goal is for our students to not only acquire valuable science knowledge but to also become advocates for their environment.
