Welcome to the MVE Library Website!

Library Vision

The Library is an inviting place where everyone grows, learns and imagines.

Library Mission

The Library is the HEART of the school where a love of reading produces learning, creation, collaboration and innovation.

Library Hours

7:15-2:50

Parents are welcome to come by and check out books for your student.

Did you know limiting your child's screen time and ensuring 20 minutes a day of reading can have a huge impact on academic success? Prek-2nd need supervision when reading.  If this goal has been met most students have the stamina to read on their own by 3rd grade. A recommended routine for beginning readers is:   read a book to your child, have them read some to you (alternate pages, look for key words), re-read a book your child knows or maybe two.  Kinder and Prek students need sound and letter practice as well as sight word practice.  A good website to support this is starfall.com.

Policies and Special Events

Book Fairs

We will have one Book Fair this year.  It will be from March 2nd-March 6th.  All sales benefit our school.

We always need help setting up and taking down.  Setting up always takes place the FRIDAY morning before the event.  It involves moving tables and chairs, setting up crates and displaying books.  The take down always happens at NOON on the last day of the event.  It involves moving tables and chairs back as well as putting books back into crates.

If this is something you think you might want to do, please fill out the link to volunteer below and email Ms. Birmingham--Thank You!

Author Events

We will have three visitors this year.  Spikey Mikey in October, Austin Reptiles in January and Margaret Clauder (AKA Mother Goose) in May.  These events create enthusiasm for reading as well as excitement.  These exciting events are paid from from Book Fair revenue.

Battle of the Bluebonnets Club

What are Bluebonnet books?---This is a list of outstanding books from the Texas Library Association for 3rd-6th graders.  The books are a mixture of picture books and chapter books.  See the Current 2025-26 Bluebonnet List

What is the Battle of the Bluebonnets?--Battle of the Bluebonnets is a quiz-bowl style competition made up of 3rd-5th graders across the district who have thoroughly read and discussed the Bluebonnet books for the current year.  Several Northside schools participate.  Each participating school sends a group of 4 to this challenge which is held in April usually at NAC.  The winners from this competition receive a district trophy and advance to the city wide competition.

When does this group start?-- The group will start up in late January.  Be on the look out for permission slips from the librarian in order to join.

Who can join--All interested 4th and 5th graders can join.  The group will eventually pared down to a team of 4 per district rules.  They will meet during their lunch times.

Book Bingo/3rd-5th Book Blogging

Students who love to read are encouraged to try out "Catch the Reading Express Bingo" AKA Book Bingo.  This is for 1st-5th.  There is a new Book Bingo every 9 weeks.  At the completion of a Book Bingo students who have turned in a completed card are eligible to participate in a Reading Party.

Students who love to discuss great literature are encouraged to try our new Book Blogging link through our Destiny page.  The Destiny page has a link to add a blog about one story you have read.  You have to be sure and add your first name and last name initial as well as the title and author name.  A picture of the cover would be great as well, then tell us something about the book without spoiling the ending.  After the librarian approves the post, you'll be able to see your post as well as your friend's post.  At the completion of each 9 weeks, students who have met that challenge, will be eligible for a Book Blogging Party (only for 3rd-5th).

Book check-out policy

Prek-1st=1 book checkout every 6 days

2nd-5th=2 book checkout every 6 days

Students come in with their class every 6 days.  They must bring back their previous book in order to check-out something new.  If students lose their book they may either replace the book with the same book from a book store or pay for the book.  Parents can visit https://www.nisd.net/parents/online-payments  to pay online.
