Can I apply online?
Yes! Free and Reduced Price School Meal applications will be available online at https://www.schoolcafe.com/ beginning August 10th.
You are encouraged to complete an online application instead of a paper application if you are able. The online application has the same requirements and will ask you for the same information as the paper application. Visit https://schoolcafe.com/ or contact Child Nutrition at (210) 397-4517 if you have any questions about the online application.
Do I need to fill out an application for each child?
No. You should use one Free and Reduced Price School Meal Application for all students in your household. We cannot approve an application that is not complete, so be sure to fill out all required information.
Will the information I provide be verified?
Yes. Your eligibility may be verified at any time during the school year. School officials may ask you to send written evidence which shows that your child(ren) qualify for free or reduced price school meals. The information you provide will be used to decide if your children should get free or reduced price meals.
When should I apply for free or reduced price meals?
You may apply for free or reduced price meals at any time during the school year. If you are not eligible now but experience a decrease in household income, an increase in household size, become unemployed or receive food stamps or TANF, you may complete an application at that time.
If your student received free meals at a Community Eligible Provision (CEP) school last year and now attends a NON-CEP school – a free and reduced price school meal application may need to be submitted to qualify for free or reduced price meals this year.
You must send in a new application unless the school told you that your child is eligible for the new school year. If you do not send in a new application that is approved by the school or you have not been notified that your child is eligible for free meals, your child will be charged the full price for meals.
My child’s application was approved last year. Do I need to fill out a new one?
Yes. A new meal application is required each school year. Your child’s application is only good for that school year and for the first few days of the new school year.
Reapplication must occur within 30 days of the first day of school. If you do not have a current application on file, meal benefits from the previous school year will expire on the 31st day after the first day of school, which means that students will be charged full price for school meals after October 5, 2020.
You are responsible for any meal charges or cost prior to the application approval by the Free & Reduced Meal Program Office.
How long does it take to process an application?
The application may take up to 10 working days to be processed once it reaches the Free & Reduced office. After the process is complete, you should receive a notification letter by mail. If you do not receive a letter, you may contact the Free & Reduced office at (210) 397-4517.
