Texas School Law states that students must be in attendance at least 90% of the time to receive credit for a course. Students may not miss more than eight (8) absences in the Fall and ten (10) absences in the Spring or 18 days for a year-long course. This includes both "excused" and "unexcused" absences. The only exceptions to this policy are Health, School Business, College Visit (2 days per year – Juniors and Seniors only) absences.
A student will NOT receive credit for a course if he/she exceeds the number of allowable absences.
Please be advised that if a student is absent without an excuse for 3 or more days or parts of days in a four-week period, or 10 or more days within a six-month period, the student’s parents and/or the student are subject to prosecution under the Texas Education Code after a Truancy Warning Notice is issued.
For further explanation of attendance, refer to your Student/Parent Handbook.
Attendance Recovery is a means for students to recover absences accrued during the school year. The Northside Independent School District has made additional options for attendance recovery available. NISD offers Online Tutoring Services in the evenings, on the weekends, and during school breaks. Anyone who receives online tutoring automatically gets their time sent to the campus for AR purposes.
NISD ATTENDANCE RECOVERY OPERATING HOURS
- Monday - Thursday 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM
- Saturday 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
How Students Can Earn Hours:
Sign into your NISD Portal.
Find and click on the Student Homework Support - Secondary tile (see image on top-left)
Fill out the digital form and note "Attendance Recovery (Online)" in the "Subject" field.
You will be directed to a live chat agent that will assign you to an AR Room (if you do not need tutoring) OR a tutor (if you need assistance with an assignment).
The Attendance Recovery (AR) Monitors are very strict and all students MUST agree to and follow NISD rules or you will be released from the session.
The Compass Program is offered to students.
The RESET Program is offered to first-time drug offenders and their parent/guardian. Students are given the opportunity to participate in sessions that promote healthy choices and skill building, in a relaxed classroom setting. The program is led by a NISD Prevention Counselor twice a week at NAHS.
Parents are strongly encouraged to attend the parent component of the program. The parent classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
- Tuesday Evening Location: Northside Learning Center, Building F, 6632 Bandera Rd, Leon Valley, TX 78238
- Thursday Evening Location: Virtual via Google Meets (by appointment only)
When students and parents both successfully complete the program, students have the opportunity to return to their home campus by having their placement time reduced at NAHS.
