Child Nutrition gets your day into gear with a healthy school lunch

Celebrate school lunch week

Northside ISD joins schools across the state in celebrating National School Lunch Week Oct. 10-14, using the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) theme “Get Your Day into Gear with a Healthy School Lunch.” Special activities commemorating this week are planned at various campuses and may include student coloring pages, special morning announcements, and fun events during meal service.

The 950 employees of the Child Nutrition Services Department serve over 87,000 meals to NISD students each and every day. The Northside Eats Cafés continually offer multiple entrée choices with a variety of fruits and vegetables daily.

And even though students say it sometimes feels like a restaurant, federal nutrition standards ensure that school cafeterias always offer low-fat or fat-free milk, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. School meals also meet limits on calories, sodium, and unhealthy fats. Visit the department’s website to view menus and other information.

Child Nutrition employees are a part of each school family and can often be seen at football games or other campus events supporting the students and wearing their school spirit shirts.
