Health - Middle School
6th Grade Healthy Habits Course
Healthy Habits is a required semester course designed to empower 6th grade students to maintain and improve their health and wellness by developing the skills, attitudes, and knowledge necessary to enhance their quality of life. The course design aligned to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for 6th Grade Health. The state adopted, and School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) Goodheart-Wilcox Texas Middle School Health Skills curriculum materials will be utilized to support TEKS-aligned course instruction.
Certain curriculum topics require an opt-in parent permission slip before instruction:
- Conflict, Violence, and Abuse Instruction
Required by SB 9 (87th) and SB 12 (89th) - Human Development Instruction
Required by HB 1525 (87th) and SB 12 (89th)

In accordance, and in compliance, with the Texas Education Code and Board Policy EHAA(LOCAL), Northside Independent School District provides human development instruction and conflict, violence, and abuse instruction as part of the required TEKS curriculum in the 6th grade Healthy Habits course. Parents have the right to view the curriculum and/or remove their child from this instruction. The opt-in consent form will be sent out by each campus. Information about the curriculum materials to support human development and conflict, violence, and abuse instruction is included below along with the resources.
Goodheart-Wilcox Texas Middle School Health Skills curriculum materials will be utilized to support human development and child anti-victimizations instruction in the 6th Grade Healthy Habits Course. Published resources are not used in their entirety for course instruction. Only TEKS aligned content within the publication will be utilized. Educating students to develop healthy behaviors today can improve their overall health and contribute to patterns of wellness that will extend into adulthood. Per TEC. CH 28 Section 483.101, we are happy to help parents purchase a copy of the student materials for Texas Health. We’ll request the student’s name and the district and campus where their student is taking the course. We’ll connect with our ISD Health contacts for verification that the student is truly enrolled in the course at the ISD.
