Thirteen NISD Academic Decathlon teams competed in the 2023 Regional Academic Decathlon competition hosted this past weekend at Warren High School. The teams competing were Brandeis, Brennan, Clark, Harlan, Health Careers, Holmes, Jay, Marshall, O’Connor, Sotomayor, Stevens, Taft, and Warren high schools.

Four teams will be advancing to state – Marshall HS, Warren HS, O’Connor HS, and Health Careers HS. They will compete in the Thomas E. Moseley Championship Finals on Feb. 23-26 at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio with the top 35 large/medium schools and 5 small schools who qualified for state.

The Academic Decathlon promotes student achievement by providing a format in which high school students compete in various academic areas. In addition to a seven-minute interview, a one-hour essay and two speeches, written comprehensive exams are given in music, art, language/literature, mathematics, economics, (social) science, and the Super Quiz. This year’s topic is “The American Revolution.

Much like the Olympics, decathletes compete for gold, silver, and bronze medals and a chance to advance to the next competition level.
