Cardboard Arcade is a tuition-based after-school program in Northside Independent School District. It is an engineering program where students work in teams or individually to design, test, redesign, retest, and eventually create a working arcade-type game. Students consider game design, rules for playing, and prior science knowledge when designing their games.

Engineering Design Process

Students are introduced to the engineering design process during this program. With each new focus, the students learn background information about the object, look at existing designs, try out a design, test it, and modify it. They also develop perseverance through the failures and missteps along the way.

Program Requirements

  • Runs 8-10 weeks, based on campus need
  • Engineer design program where students create a working arcade game
  • Each game has a goal and rules
  • Games are made mainly of reusable materials, such as cardboard from various sources
  • Students' games may be presented during a family night, school carnival, PTA meeting, or other family event

Flight Club is an after-school program for kindergarten and first grade students. During this 8 week program, students learn about the basic principles of flight and design. Students work to design, test and modify tools that interact with air - kites, parachutes, paper airplanes, and simple rockets.
