It is my pleasure to be able to serve as the Principal at Powell Elementary.
I have been in education for 18 years where I joined NISD as an Instructional Assistant at Dr. Joe Ward Elementary, Special Education teacher at Howsman Elementary, Special Education Coordinator at Ward Elementary, Administrator Intern at Carlos Coon, Vice-Principal at Christian Evers and Associate Principal at Ward Elementary. I am excited to now be a part of the Powell Family.
At Powell Elementary, our core beliefs are to provide a safe and challenging environment for our students to learn at their maximum potential and create opportunities that foster meaningful relationships among students, staff, families and the community. Our partnership between home and school is extremely important for the success of every child. We would like to encourage our families to join our Powell PTA and stay connected to the great things that our teachers at Powell are doing every day.
On behalf of our Powell staff, we are ignited and grateful to do the work we do with every child so please do not hesitate to contact us for any questions. or support. Go Thunderbirds!

The Associate Principal also serves as the Campus Behavior Coordinator. They can be reached by email at marissa.barboza@nisd.net or by phone at 210-397-0465.
It is with great excitement that I write this to you as your new Associate Principal of Powell Elementary. I feel extremely fortunate to now be part of this school community and play a role in supporting the staff, students, and families of Powell. I am thrilled to bring my skills as an educator and leader to work with you toward student success and family engagement.
This year will be my 15th year as an educator, of which the last 10 years have been in NISD at Passmore Elementary (9 years) and Murnin Elementary (1 year). My experience as a classroom teacher includes 10 years as a 3rd grade teacher and 4 years as a 1st grade teacher.
I have a strong belief that we are life-long learners and expect that I will continue to learn much in this role. Most importantly, I bring a belief that students belong at the center of all school-related decisions. I am ready to utilize my experience and beliefs to support staff, our students, and our community. Because the relationships between teachers, administrators and families are vital to the success of our students and school, I am looking forward to meeting and getting to know each of you. Here’s to an exciting year of learning and growing together!
